Description

This course will introduce learners to a basic understanding of ‘community renewable and, sustainable energy’, placed within the context of the need for information to transition to a net zero carbon community due to Climate Change and the emerging energy economy. Learners will focus on the revolution that is occurring internationally, within Australia and in particular within Victoria and in our own lives, as local communities and households take control of meeting their energy needs while enhancing quality of life and sustainability.
Learners will come to understand a number of sustainable energy technologies and behaviours, be able to complete basic assessments of their home energy efficiency and explore recommendations for improvement. They will learn about various community energy projects, electric vehicles, batteries and other emerging technologies.  
 
The course will illustrate how communities can benefit socially and financially from community sustainable energy projects and strategies at the household level through to small and medium scale projects, and how such projects can be leveraged to build community connections, community resourcefulness, employment opportunities and community resilience while tackling Climate Change.


This course is for you if you would like to:

• They will understand and be able to explain how community renewable energy can be utilized to address both climate change, community engagement and community empowerment to build community resilience.
• Students can make informed decisions about how their own home energy efficiency, energy production, energy use and storage can be facilitated.
• They can become engaged with the emerging community energy revolution that exists in local community energy groups or form a renewable energy guild
• Equip learners to pursue further studies as Home Energy Assessors

Field Trip - Saturday 2nd April 9am-3:30pm to SolarQuip Smart Energy Lab in Mt Toolebewong. Transport will be provided.

Concession card holders - $20 enrolment fee

The program could lead to further study in Sustainable Energy or  Home Energy Efficiency.

If you are a concession card holder you will need to present your concession card at one of our centres prior to the start of the course in order to be eligible for the concession fee.  

Eligibility for government-subsidised fees and concession fees

Government-subsidised fee
If you are a permanent Resident and/or Australian Citizen/New Zealand Citizen and not enrolled in mainstream secondary school you are eligible for a government subsidised fee. 

Concession fee
This fee is available to:

• Commonwealth Health Care Card holders, and their dependant children and dependant spouses
• Pensioner Concession Card holders, and their dependant children and dependant spouses
• Veteran's Gold Card holders (but not their dependants).
• Please note: if under 17 years of age and disengaged from school, participants will need to obtain an official Transition from School Form for us to sight.

If you are eligible, please select the concession fee when enrolling and click "calculate discount".  You will also need to present your concession card at one of our centres prior to the start of the course in order to be eligible for a concession fee.  

For non-eligible individuals, the full fee will apply (see 'Fee Structure' below).

About the Tutor

Alan Pears is a Senior Industry fellow at RMIT. He was previously an Adjunct Professor at RMIT and taught in the Environment program from 2005-2015. Alan presents guest lectures in a range of courses, contributes to seminars, workshops and conferences and mentors students. Through his consulting practice and links to community and professional organisations, Alan has worked on many projects in the clean energy, planning, climate policy, green building and public education fields.
