Description

Start your journey into a new language with a basic introduction to Italian or extend your knowledge with one of our more advanced classes.  These enjoyable, structured courses explore vocabulary, grammar, culture and expression in a fun and friendly environment.  Class structure and activities vary depending on the topics of the week but will include teacher instruction, games, listening and speaking activities

We have two streams of Italian classes, an evening class which is only offered online and day time classes which are delivered in person at Diamond Creek.


Each class progresses at its own pace to introduce the following topics:

Level 1 - Beginner 
(there are 16 sessions at this level which are split across 2 terms 'a' & 'b')
This course begins at the very beginning and assumes absolutely no prior knowledge of Italian.  
  • Italian pronunciation
  • nouns and adjectives
  • indefinite and definite articles
  • personal pronouns
  • regular and common irregular verbs in present and simple past tense
  • simple prepositions and prepositional phrases
  • possessive pronouns
  • vocabulary will include areas such as greetings, numbers, colors, telling the time, directions, seasons, months, days, nationalities, jobs, food.....

Level 2 - Assumes some prior knowledge, reviews the above and introduces the following:
  • Reflexive verbs and pronouns
  • Direct and indirect object pronouns
  • Idiomatic expressions
Vocabulary will include topics such as holidays, families, careers, planning activities, shopping, ordering in restaurants.

Level 3 and 4 - Assumes prior knowledge, reviews the above and introduces the following:
  • imperative tense
  • future tense
  • imperfect tense

Amici - Assumes extensive prior knowledge of all topics above and introduces the following:
  • conditional tense
  • il gerundio

These courses are open to people 18 years and over.

These courses are held at our Diamond Creek Centre - 119 Cowin Street, Diamond Creek or online via Zoom.


What to bring

Pen and binder folder or display book is useful to keep class notes in order.


About the Tutors

Tracey studied Italian in secondary school and then participated in a youth exchange to Italy.  She has completed a Bachelor of Arts and Diploma of Education majoring in Italian language and literature. Tracey has taught both children and adults and loves sharing her passion for Italian language and culture. She has been an enthusiastic part of our tutoring team at Living & Learning Nillumbik since 2009.

Alessandra is a native speaker with a masters in teaching Italian. She brings energy and variety to the popular online evening classes, finding many engaging ways to help students learn.


Laura is a native Italian teacher from near Rome with a background in Translation and Linguistics studies.  She has been a member of VATI (Victorian Association of Teachers of Italian) and tutoring people interested in learning Italian for several years.  She believes her purpose as an Italian teacher is to facilitate her students to understand Italian Language and culture, giving them the possibility to learn with confidence and ease.  


Concession fees

Concession fees are available to holders of Health Care Cards, Pension concession cards or Veterans Gold cards.  If you are eligible, please select the concession fee when enrolling and click "calculate discount'.  You may be asked to present your card for verification when attending the course.
