Exploring art styles and mediums



Do you want to explore a particular painting style, medium or technique?
Have you always wanted to express yourself creatively but don't know where to start?
Maybe you want to learn the basics of painting or you have a particular project in mind?  

In this course, you will be guided by our experienced tutor to achieve your goals.

Participants have the opportunity to exhibit in our end of year diversARTy exhibition at Eltham Library Gallery to celebrate their achievements with friends and family.

This course is open to people aged 18 years and over.

This course is held on Thursday mornings and Wednesday evenings at our Diamond Creek centre - 119 Cowin St, Diamond Creek  

What to bring

Note: please purchase quality products for the best result. If in doubt, the tutor can advise you at the first session, before you purchase.

Bring materials in your media of choice, and the following:
  • An A3 visual diary or A3 paper (brown paper works well - either an A3 pad or A2 sheets)
  • Artliner fine liner pen
  • 6B pencils
  • Sharpener and eraser
  • Pastels or watercolour pencils or watercolour paints. (Sennelier and Schminke pastel brands are recommended for the best results). 
  • Brushes, if using paints
  • A toolbox or basket for your materials
  • Several reference images of interesting subject matter in A4 colour photocopies if you don't have a specific project.

Victorian Artists Supplies, 715 Main Road, Eltham will give a 10% discount on purchases to those enrolled in a Living & Learning Nillumbik course.

We advise you to buy your materials/equipment no more than one week prior to the start of the course to avoid expense for a course that may be cancelled.


About the Tutor

Mel Paine is a Nillumbik landscape artist who is experienced in all different mediums. Mel has taught a wide range of groups from youth to elderly. She was a recipient of the Nillumbik Artist in residence program in 2021 where she ran workshops for teens at Wadambuk in St Andrews. Mel is also a current member of the Nillumbik Arts & Culture Advisory Committee.

Concession fees

A Concession fee of around 10% off is available to holders of Health Care Cards, Pension concession cards or Veterans Gold cards. 
If you are eligible, please select the concession fee when enrolling and click "calculate discount".
You may be asked to present your Health Care card, Pension concession card or Veterans Gold card for verification when attending a course or activity.
