Sourdough breadmaking - Tutor Jenna Farrington

Learn to create delicious sourdough bread in your own kitchen. All of Jenna's classes are hands-on and are both informative and fun. Jenna shares her knowledge and passion for food in order to inspire you implement what you learn. She will show and guide you using simple steps to successfully make this tasty and wholesome bread at home.

Sourdough online - introduction (one hour Zoom class)
The Zoom meeting will be a structured one hour class but your work starts at least eight days earlier. While the face to face participants receive some of Jenna's sourdough culture (starter or mother), since we are socially isolating, you have the added bonus of making your own starter drawing on the micro-organisms in your local area. Understand the management of your sourdough culture or 'Mother", the work of microorganisms in sourdough production, hydration levels and equipment.

You will finish up with your own sourdough starter, a crusty loaf ready to eat and all the information you need to make great sourdough bread. In addition you will have access to ongoing support and advice from Jenna who has 12 years of experience baking sourdough bread.

Sourdough bread making (face to face)
This fun workshop will cover basic theory as well as the tactile pleasure of all the steps of making bread from milled flour. Suitable for novices and those who want to expand their bread making repertoire.

Topics covered:
  • The essential ingredients and tools of the trade
  • The principle steps of bread making
  • Baker’s Percentage and Hydration
  • Mixing, kneading and folding dough
  • Shaping loaves, scoring and baking
  • Maintaining a starter

From the workshop you will take home:
  • A piece of dough which can be baked at home
  • A sourdough starter

Please bring the following in addition to the items listed below:
  • A medium sized bowl (eg. Pyrex 2L or 3L) 
  • A small container or jar with a lid to store sourdough starter and take home

What to bring

Please bring your own apron, cutting mat, tea towel and storage container/s for any leftovers.
Recipes, tips, hints and food leftovers will be taken home by participants.

Sourdough is open to youth 12 years and over when they enroll with a parent or guardian.


Sourdough online is held online using Zoom. Participants must have a suitable device and data plan to run Zoom. For people who are new to Zoom, we offer a free, online, supported practice session. 

Sourdough bread making is held at our Panton Hill Centre - 18 Bishops Road, Panton Hill

Concession fees

Concession fees are available to holders of Health Care Cards, Pension concession cards or Veterans Gold cards.  If you are eligible, please select the concession fee when enrolling and click "calculate discount'.  You may be asked to present your card for verification when attending the course or activity.
