Description

These practical, hands-on courses and workshops will cover the most important aspects of your own camera to get you taking images that you will be proud of.  
 
In each session you will be able to practice what you learn using your own camera with lighting, backdrops and subject matter all provided.

These courses and workshops are open to people aged 14 years and over.  If you are under 18 years, the Child Parental Consent section of the enrolment form must be completed prior to the first session.

Participants have the opportunity to exhibit in our end of year diversARTy exhibition at Eltham Library Gallery to celebrate their achievements with friends and family.



Digital photography - introduction (face to face)

The course covers:
 
  • Understanding your camera's controls
  • Focusing (making the camera work for you)
  • Exposure (using the camera in different light and shade)
  • Choosing the best aperture controls (choosing how much you want in focus)
  • The best camera setting for landscapes 
  • Choosing and using lenses 
  • Choosing the best shutter controls (freezing or blurring action)
  • The best setting for sports photography
  • Using your camera in low light (working in the dark)
  • Using your camera's flash (and using a separate flash)
  • The best camera setting for photographing portraits and children (or portraits of children!)
  • Black and white photography 
  • What makes a great photograph (understanding composition)
  • And more….

Digital photography - intermediate (face to face)

Taking your camera to the next level, we move on from what we learnt in the introduction course and add more techniques to make stunning images.
 
The course covers:
 
  • Advanced exposure controls
  • Taking sport and concert photos
  • Using software
  • Night photography
  • Star photography
  • Macro and close up photography
  • Taking panoramas and landscapes
  • Colour controls and understanding white balance
  • Studio photography and studio lighting explained
  • Light painting and special effects photography
  • Using filters to enhance photographs
  • Black and white photography
  • Special effects photography
 
 

What to bring

For all courses:
 
  • Bring your digital camera (any make, fully charged) and a note book.
  • Notes will be supplied.

About the Tutor

Alwyn Hanson has had years of experience working with students from 9 to 99 years.  His philosophy is to teach photography with "less physics, more photos."  Alwyn has been working in photography for over 30 years and until recently ran photography courses at Michael's media school in Melbourne's CBD for 10 years.
 

Concession fees

A Concession fee of around 10% off is available to holders of Health Care Cards, Pension concession cards or Veterans Gold cards. 
If you are eligible, please select the concession fee when enrolling and click "calculate discount".
You may be asked to present your Health Care card, Pension concession card or Veterans Gold card for verification when attending a course or activity.
