Barista Basics - 1 day course

This one-day course will offer the full range of front of house aspects to working in a café/small restaurant environment with specific focus on barista training, customer service and team work.  Learners will gain hands on experience in the safe operation of a commercial coffee machine learning how to prepare and make a range of coffee types, know and observe safe practices in using an espresso machine and grinder, and have a basic understanding of how to shut down and clean the coffee-making equipment. Important skills such as customer service and team work will be covered and reinforced through role plays and simulated work scenarios.
This course is aimed at providing people looking for a job in cafes with some basic experience in the industry. It will also lead to further education pathways in Hospitality at local TAFE. On completion you will receive a Certificate of Achievement.
Open to anyone over 15 years of age.

Wed 12 Jan - Eltham Living & Learning Centre (15-18yrs only, fee-paying only)
Wed 19 Jan – Panton Hill Living & Learning Centre (15-18 yrs only, fee-paying only)

What to Bring 

  • a drink bottle
  • lunch
  • a snack/morning tea if desired
  • notepad and pen.
There is a small fridge in the classroom where you can store your lunch for the day

Eligibility for Government Subsidised fees 

Government-subsidised fee
If you are a permanent Resident and/or Australian Citizen/New Zealand Citizen and not enrolled in mainstream secondary school you are eligible for a government subsidised fee. 

Concession fee
This fee is available to:

  • Commonwealth Health Care Card holders, and their dependant children and dependant spouses
  • Pensioner Concession Card holders, and their dependant children and dependant spouses
  • Veteran's Gold Card holders (but not their dependants).
  • Please note: if under 17 years of age and disengaged from school, participants will need to obtain an official Transition from School Form for us to sight.
    There are no pre-requisites for this course.
    People with a disability are encouraged to apply.

For non-eligible individuals, the full fee will apply.
